    Default Any electricians online?

    Any electricians online?

Just a quick question should i be getting resistance between the 2 reds/browns on a ring main?

I think not personally, but i'd like to know for sure.

I know phase to earth resistance is bad
but what about phase to phase on a ring? I'm getting resistance of 900ohms.

    please no lectures about part-p

i'm an electrician, well i've been accused of it from time to time, lol

you are correct, phase to phase resistance on a ring main is bad, first of all make sure you havnt got the ' legs ' mixed up with the other ring, or any radials, then ensure everything is unpluged from the circuit, just to make sure,

if you have 900 ohms then i would say you have a bad connection in the back of a socket or a joint box, tho there shouldnt be any joints, any spurs on the ring will also need to be tested, the reading you should be looking for is either less than 1 ohm, or at least the same as the neutral on the same ring circuit

you are however incorrect about phase to earth ( cpc ) being bad, its the opposite, its very good, the higher the better,,

are you using a multimeter or a ' megger ' , as the megger is the only one to test ' insulation resistance ' , however a ' multimeter ' set on ohms should be used to test continuity, which is what you are doing

    hope this helps

at the end of the day if you are unsure call in an NIC EIC registered electrical contractor, its not worth the risk, from either electric shock, or fire,
