Smile Newbie Auto: Was about to buy... and then i found this forum... HELP please!!??!!

    Hello,

Not sure if I should thank everyone or hate them now!!

Background: I need an automatic car for under £6k that is reliable for driving around london, carrying the dogs, and handles the weekly trip up the M6 to manchester.

I had my heart set on the 1.9 (150)cdti. Every website raved about it.

Then I came here... to the guru's of signums to find out most want to report them to watchdog... and that it has no power off the mark which wouldn't work for tootling around cities.

Should I change manufacturer? Maybe go for a mondeo or volvo?

    Should I consider a 3litre?

Should I carry on and get a 1.9cdti 150 auto and hope for the best!?

Please advise as 3 months of reasearch went down the pan this morning!

    Thanks in anticipation, Shem

They do have their problems but when running fine they are great! I can't stay away from them, on my 3rd now, if you get it from a garage then make sure you get an extensive warrantee just in case the dmf or inlet goes

    Good luck

I've had a 55 plate auto 1.9 150 for 3 and a half years now and loved every minute, there is a bit of turbo lag off the mark but it more than makes up for it when the turbo does wake up.

Hi, and welcome first of all.

O to business, a forum is really only going to highlight negative, as none of us and many have been on this board for a long long time (not me I am only here about a year really) so that indicates the loyalty to the brand, and the length of tenure. These are indeed very good cars, not perfect but then go look for a brand that is for this sort of money!

Don't agree that they have no power for tootling around town, the 150 is a very muscular wee thing from any revs over idle.

The problems that do occur are almost carbon copy on all modern diesel engines, the egr the DMF, inlet manifold (also called) the swirl flaps, so which ever route you choose it will have some expense potentially attached.

My suggestion is to go look and go drive then if you can ensure it has a water tight warranty if you ant piece of mind.

hi and welcome to the Forum = Signums are a great drive and a little out of the ordinary as Highlighted above most people do indeed come on here when they have issues as most people will find that forums are indeed a highly informative source of knowledge .... as said some have had issues with theirs and others have found them to be bullet proof ... the same can be said for most engines across most manufacturers and not just Vauxhall

so if you HAVE set your heart on the Signum then take it for a test, check it thoroughly (take a mechanic friend if you have one or if your unsure then might be worth paying for an inpsection from the AA/RAC .... you can use whta they find to haggle the price as well) and make sure you have a decent warranty in case you do have any issues that may need resolving

you could also consider the 3.0v6 diesel for a real cruiser

    Thumbs up

Faith restored thanks vauxhall john, paeder, badblack, Derek Mc and Deztroyer!!

Thanks for the welcome, advise and speedy responses.

I'm not bothered about the mileage as long as it has the legs. I plan to drive it til it dies anyway.

Would you reccomend the 2005 1.9(150) or 2004 3.0v6 as it seems i can get them for a similar price with 90,000+ miles? or would you look for an alternative.

Also, am i right in thinking the design or elite are the models to go for? I can't really see any difference apart from a wooden dash.

    Thanks guys

design = lowered over standard model by 15mm will have half leather sports seats

Elite = top spec full leather heated seats and dual zone climate control (standard height suspension)

(dependant on age would also have other bits)

option over the two for me would be the 3.0v6 ...then again ive got a 2.8v6 auto signum so i might be prejudiced

    Talking

Thanks john. I think parking sensors and toys sound perfect. Is 3.0v6 a bit thirsty for the city?

Thanks Deztroyer- i think 15mm lower might mean i bottom out on all the speed bumps so might avoid a design. climate control sounds like something i'm definately up for... no more faffing with blower speed and red to blue for the temperature control. Elite it is.

Any reccomendations on pre or post face lift would be appreciated guys!

    Many thanks, Shem
