    Default 2.8 Elite auto box

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but is the auto box in the 2.8 elite the same as the VXR?

I thought it was, but Thorney say otherwise, and it there words the Elite autobox is crap.

If it is different whats the max torque rating for it? I know the VXR one seems fine up to 400lbft.

    Cheers as always

I always thought they were the same.

When I got my VXR auto I asked Courtney if the auto box could handle a remap. They said they would look into it & never came back

Don't think they have a clue about the auto.

Stampede has a 2.8t vec auto and i think he has a custom map and he's had the torque lowered slightly to save his box perhaps drop him a pm Ziggy.

Seems to be a lot of that recently Stephen. Over on VXRonline there is a guy who bought a Thorney Bluefin for his VXR 280 when he put it on the rollers it was only pushing out 274bhp. He contacted Thorney's about it and it seems they sent him the map for a 250 bhp by mistake. What a **** up. I wonder if this may have been similar to your problem.

Info regarding AF40 autobox. It's OK to 450Nm (about 330ft/lbs) of torque, but only on diesels. Otherwise it's 400Nm.

I'm not sure exactly what is meant by 'maximum'. All I do know is that the maximum flywheel torque of a production car engine never exceeds the maximum rated torque capacity of the gearbox fitted to it on the production line.

Vectra V6 diesel has 400Nm of torque in standard tune and is fitted with the F40 gearbox that also has a rating of 400Nm. This trend can be seen elsewhere in the VX range. For example, the Astra VXR is limited to 320Nm of torque in standard tune with its M32 gearbox fitted.

The Insignia VXR was allowed to develop up to 435Nm of torque for some markets, but that was only after some modifications had been made to its F40 gearbox.

I've no doubt that the gearboxes are capable of taking much more abuse, but that would lead to a much shorter gearbox life expectancy in the same way that a tuned engine isn't going to last as long as an engine in standard tune.

No gain without pain as they say.
