Default need help if possible please

Hi Firstly great forums, I am now a proud owner of a 2003 signum! and must say love the car.

    The problem

I purchased the car today cheap BUT

6 gear there is no drive , slight whine but just revs, gears 1-5 flawless and very smooth.

car has done 82k full service history (all VX apart from last)

Could i complain to them? as it seems quite odd

any ideas? also if its stripped the cog is there a magnet at the bottom to hold the pieces? as it still drives lovely and smooth but no 6th gear!

    thanks in advance

Vehicle : Vectra and a Signum

Trim : top of the line in both

    Engine : Z18XE,Z19DTH,Z20NET

what engine is in the car?

It will probably be easier to buy a secondhand gearbox and have it fitted but will probably cost about 500 quid all in..

    hi mate its the 2.0T

do you think its ok to still drive? as it still drives lovely, no noises jerking or anything would vx cover this? even though its done 82k? as surely the drive should not go in 6th only

you are out of warranty so vx will not cover it, and they will charge you a fortune, did you buy it from vx or a dealer?... the labour charges involved in taking off a gearbox and then taking it apart bit by bit etc will cost more than replacing it with a secondhand unit. If they were able to see damaged parts inisde the gearbox getting the parts will be expensive or be secondhand..

I would not like to say whether its ok to keep driving it, the F40 gearbox is a good one, it can be a bit clunky but can take a right beating. I am not familiar with anybody else having this problem with that gearbox.

You may want to drain your gearbox oil to see what it looks like then refill it will 2.4 litre of fully synthetic..

you always want to try the cheapest option, but as you that you can actually select 6th but nothing happens other than a whirring sound is puzzling. Hopefully somebody who will come along and chip in with some better info but you do need to get it diagnosed as you do not want to loose any more gears.. I spend a lot of time in 6th and my car will still take off in 6th when i put my foot down.. I have the same engine and gearbox as you btw.. you will get better mpg using your 6th so its gotta be worth getting it diagnosed somewhere, you could try your local vx dealer, just ask for diagnosis and then get the work done elsewhere..
