I had same issue with my wifes car. Heater matrix had completely frozen up so off it went to the garage. They kept it indoors over night, drained the system then bleeded it for air etc, nice and toasty now!

I think the anti-freeze it was supposed to have in it at its previous service got forgot about or wasn't diluted correctly.

    I would give three options..

    1) Insufficient coolant in the circuit... will blow cool air even when the engine is warm.
    Check the header tank level

    2) Blocked heater matrix - not allowing sufficient flow of warm water - you would need to flush the matrix through with clean water, and then refill the cooling circuit with fresh coolant at the correct mix ratio.

    3) Air lock in the cooling circuit - you would need to firmly massage the large hoses from the radiater to push air though the circuit, until it is expelled through the header tank.

On an outside chance, the water pump may have become defective - not common, but the impeller blades may become detatched from the cam-belt driven spindle. This would cause lack of sufficient coolant flow through the circuit.

...ok, I have got to the heater matrix and the pipes going to it are both hot/warm, therefore it must be a blocked matrix?....

should the matrix itself get really hot? thanks..

If both the inlet and outlet pipes on the matrix feel about the same temp and the body of the matrix is "hot" its possible that the air blend flap in the heater box is out of adjustment or the mechanical control for the flap has come off. Just a thought.

I've got the same on my 1.8 after changing the thermostat last week. Both pipes to the matrix are warm but the other pipes are too hot to hold. I'm guessing blocked matrix.
