what temp does diesel start freezing

got as low as - 11 today. what temp does diesel starting freezing ? is there a trick where they add a spot of petrol with the diesel to stop it freezing ? been watching to much ice road truckers

no dont do that pmsl, diesel doesnt freeze... im in the army and had diesel in -20 and still not had any problems. it should be fine, i have never come into any issues where it has frozen anyways

I use Shell V Power diesel which is good down to -20

not sure about other manufacturers

Diesel usually starts freezing around -16C, petrol and other fuels are usually beyond -25C.

diesel tends to wax when cold, most car inc the vec have a fuel heater in the fuel filter . i wouldnt really worry untill we get down to about -20

If the diesel contains larger amounts of bio diesel, it may start to sludge before -20. Military fuels include FSII or other such inhibitors. The AA have in the past recomended adding petrol to the diesel at upto 5%, can't remember the temp that was for now but the works mini bus did once get stuck in Europe when the diesel sludged in it.

Most important thing it to allow the car to warm up for at least a few minutes before driving anywhere and keep the revs down to prevent the turbo being damaged from lack of oil flow.

Not petrol, paraffin
Works out at about £1.50 per litre
Paraffin and diesel do not mix
You therefore need to add the Paraffin first
Do not mix more than 40% Paraffin
10% Paraffin will lower the winter grade of diesel by about 3'C

Even in 1998 when the day temperature was -25'C the issue becomes frozen diesel underground rather than in fuel tanks
Therefore, don't bother
Once diesel becomes unavailable due to frozen at the petrol station, it's too late

TBH guys, I think you are worrying too much. Back home in Romania we have in every winter less than -20 C and last winter in the mountains it went down to -38 C. Except for the fact that it will take a few seconds more to get the glow plugs ready, I never had a problem. Indeed, if it's very cold it's recommended to let the engine run for at least 5 minutes.

Interesting thread, I was beginning to wonder, as we made ITV Central News at the weekend for being -12, and the forecast is -20 in week. Why did I offer to take our daughter and grandson to the airport this week (and can they fit me in a suitcase to go to Egypt)

i dont think diesel do.......could be wrong but id say it didnt tho maybe go thick like oil as diesel is oil based
