Not heard of this problem on the estate, usually the darn things stop halfway through closeing. If you havn't already done so, try your spare key, just incase its a button issue on the fob. Might also be worth popping out the switch on the tailgate and checking the wires haven't worked loose, they are just a spade connection. While the button is out, you could try connecting the wires briefly with a paper clip opened up, to mimmic the switch operating. If the tailgate closes, it's a faulty switch.

dead easy, it simply clips into the taigate trim. If you use a small flat blade screwdriver between the switch outer frame and tailgate trim, it just pops out. If i recall rightly, the clips are on the shorter side of the switch.
What i meant on the fob, is there might be a short in it, between the normal door opening button, top right and the tailgate release, lower button.

yes, i found it this easy as you need to remove this switch before taking off the tailgate trim when replacing a bulb.

Be sure to use the screwdriver between the switch surround and the carpeted trim, not between the actual switch and switch surround.

on the button on the interior of the tailgate, the one you see with the tailgate open (right hand side as you stand behind the car) and the little symbol of a car and tailgate. Usually one push and the tailgate self closes. As i said, with the button out you disconnect the little two cable harness and using a paperclip, BRIEFLY across the contacts, this mimics the button being pushed and the tailgate should close, indicating its that button at fault. DO NOT LEAVE THE PAPERCLIP IN THE HARNESS.
