    Default Slippy conditions!

Near carshed the Vectra this morning into the wall at the side of my in-laws drive. Was taking my daughter over to them (they look after her on Fridays to save us a bit of nursery fee) and just as I was turning in the front end of the car lost grip. Managed to get her around and missed the pillar by mm's. Came out in a cold sweat. May be I should look into winter tyres. The bad weather seems to be starting earlier every winter over the last few years!

This is the earliest "start" for 17 years according to the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11843895

Slow down earlier and while you're still steering a straight course.

William, in these conditions it is now less about ability and more about equipment, it's dire in places.

There are quite a few 215/50 x 17 winter brands about at not a lot of money and I am watching the ad's closely if I get a few quids I'll be getting some too!

There has been very little snow in Antrim, it was black ice on the road. Going to phone my usual tyre place to enquire. I wonder how much a set of Vectra wheels would cost from a scrapper or steel basic wheel from a dealer, so that I am not having to bin my current tyres.

We had a slight dusting of snow again today. The Vec seems to be quite good in these conditions imo and you can feel exactly what the wheels are doing.

I had no problems with mine in January (well apart from getting stuck trying to reverse out of the drive )

Years ago I got stuck in a snow drift with my Lada Riva. In the end I tampered with the engine so that it would not start, and was able to inch the car out of the drift with the starter motor. Wouldn't like to try that with a modern engine.

Time to slow down, watch the temperature readings, and only go out if we need to.

I tried to turn left in my Mk1 Cortina auto on back roads between Church Fenton and Linton on Ouse, around 1978/9. Car/snow had other ideas and slid diagonally across junction into low ditch. I put the rear interior rubber mats under back wheels, pulled the choke out to raise revs enough for Torque converter to inch it back out, then sat and watched it back itself onto the road again. Also wouldn't fancy doing it with a modern car
