Tyres for 18" rims

Hi all,

Getting lost in the search for alloys
So as I understand I am looking for wheels: 5x110 ET35-45. However now I am also confused in terms of width!
If I order 18" rims which are 8J (presume 8" wide), what size tyres will fit:

• 225/40/18
• 225/45/18
• 235/40/18
• 235/45/18

I also have 235/40/18 on mine. That was the size i was told to have from my local alloy specialist warehouse

So 225/40/18 or 225/45/18 will fit on the 8J wide wheel? Confused as I heard you might have to "stetch" tyres depending on tyre size and wheel width. Having seen alloys with tyres which have been stretched, its hideous! Not to mention the rims get kerbed much easier.
