Default Winter tyres, 2 or 4? Vids included

Just for a bit of information really.

I have seen a lot of posts of late about winter tyres being pointless/useless and that people should just drive to the conditions. Also that fitting 2 is ok and that 4 is pointless.

Firstly, people don't all drive the same, what you may find ok and handle in a cautious manner, others will drive like dicks. We can only cater for ourselves.

2 over 4? Is it any good? Yes they will get you going, but you never know whats around the corner, what if you have to brake hard to avoid a child who just runs out? What if................... yes there are a lot of what if's but its something we (imo) should at least consider and not go all stupid about. I mean, what if a plane hit the house? Yes it can happen, accidents do yet we are still cautious with other things and don't even think about it. have you ever told or been told to never run with scissors in your hand etc? i have never fallen with them in my hand but its just common sense. Something that a lot of people seem to lack.

Now I have found a few vids on you tube, I cannot comment on the fact that the cars are different etc yet I still believe it the results should be taken into account. If I had done the experiments then things would have been kept constant!

First Vid - 2 mins 40 seconds demonstrates 2 vs 4 tyres. Its a fairly long vid but imo worth watching.

Winter tyres vs summer tyres a test in the wet with identical cars.

Summer tyres vs winter tyres in the snow

Please note, don't flame me as I have just brought these to your attention. There is a point to be made and I believe these vids show it. Something to think about?

Most people don't need them due to the local conditions, What did you think of the videos though? make you think or do you think they are rubbish?

In Europe particully Eastern Europe cars have to have winter tyres fitted for 3-4 months of the year for there insurance to be valid.

They have another set of wheels which we should have this here because many drivers are just plain too thick when it comes to ice and snow and the tyre may help.

The cost for the vectra 16" was a staggering £85.00 per corner plus the wheels x4., But if this is what you need then so be it.

1, as I posted I cannot comment on the car, but the 2 min 40 seconds does show 2 vs 4 tyres all on one car.
2, Maybe because that is the difference, the highway code states the braking distance is much longer in the wet compared to the day. Its just showing you? Or do you honestly think he didn't brake to fool everyone?
3, snow is our current problem that seems to be getting worse.

I don't personally ever think it will be law here due to that outlay that you have said. Put it seems our winters are getting worse and more people are thinking about them.

I always just put 2 on. Was using the vectra as a taxi last year and never had a problem in the snow whatsoever. Was quite funny when all the tightwads were getting stuck everywhere and I was passing them uphill without a hint of wheelspin!

Thats exactly the point, but then you have grown up with it being the norm rather than thinking its just a costly exercise.
