Default Dealer put wrong viscosity oil in?

I have today picked up my 2007 Vectra Estate 1.8i VVT (Z18 XER) from a Car Supermarket. They have their own servicing facility and have serviced the car before I collected it. Looking through all the bumph this evening and they have stated in the service book that they have put 10W-40 viscosity oil in it when Vauxhall state it should have 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40.

Not too chuffed as it clearly states this in the service book that they've completed!!!

Anyway, I've already arranged to take the car back in next week as I discovered a broken air vent shortly after I collected it and I will ask them to change oil at the same time.

Question is will I do any damage by running with this oil for a week before I get chance to take it in? I'm guessing it will be ok for short term but just after some reassurance really.

    Cheers.

clean oil is loved by engines

to be honest i run 5w-30 year round

there is an argument to support more dense oils in summer as temps increase and less dense oils in winter as temps decrease

    i wouldn;t worry and wouldn't change

just make sure they accept liability if something goes wrong between now and next oil change

then change oil in next 6 months

If it was me and strictly me I would have taken it back. I am to particular about that especially as they could say to you 'you should of notified us of that sir.' and the usual nonsense - if something does go wrong.

Personally I wouldn't bank on claiming anything if damage is done. Now doubt someone will disagree though.

But you have a CDTI? Different engine therefore you could get away with more.... then I wouldn't be too sure.

It won't do any damage short term and many use that oil anyway. Dealers etc use it because it's cheaper. Just get it changed out.

My old Gsi had 10w40 in it for it's first 80k. Only got changed for the correct 5w30 when I got it.

    Thumbs up

I would be so careful with this one, as the cam gears are hydraulic [using engine oil and oil pressure to control the valve timing] the valve timing is also controlled by the ecu, i have always used fully syn long life [desos as it is now called i think???] with these engines... 5w 30-40s.....

Most engines now require the correct grade of oil to ensure correct engine emissions! I'm not sure this applies to the VVTi but I'd be getting it drained and refilled with the correct grade asap especially as the weather has turned colder and the thinner oil will circulate better from a cold start. If in doubt ring your local VX dealer for advice.

    Default

Get it changed as soon as you can, the vvt 1.8 should be 5W-30, GMs own motor oil dexos2 Fuel economy, long life, is the one I would chose and its cheap enough, its what I am using in my 1.8 none vvt, smooth, quiet, and good mpg, just done a full tank of all very short trips, 7 miles max, around town 34.8 mpg(400 miles), before that I did a long m-way run at 70/75 mph 43 mpg in 512 miles, so no complaints from me.

The specification is primarily GM-LL, long life oil
As you have noted 10W40 oil is not normally to this specification
The isuue is, was it a service to OE specification?
If the car is still under OE warranty, then GM-LL oil MUST be used

If they do it so be it

If not, then replace the oil after 10K miles, it won't last much longer than that

i was told something along the lines of 10/40 for cars up to MY04'ish and then 5/30 for cars onwards
Plasma's Tech2 services are now open and able to provide services
