    Default phoned garage thermostat ?

explained to them, car not reaching op temp, just sits at 70 degrees, if i turn fans off or have fans on cool it will reach 85 degrees, but as soon as i turn on heater and fan on 2, it quickly drops to 70 degrees, also noticed a drop in mpg, guy spoke to someone and came back with some info, he said this is normal and as long as it doesnt drop to zero it's fine, but how can it be if the car is not getting up to temp even on a 14 mile trip to work, he said temp will drop with heating on and i agree but not by as much as it does with mine, i do get heat through the blowers, my old car astra 1.7 cdti takes longer to heat up, but when it does it stays at 80-85 even with heating on.

I have always found when ive had a diesel that they run colder in the winter. This is normal as they dont heat up as easily as a petrol engine.

If your adamant you want the thermostat replaced book it in and ask them to supply and fit a new thermostat and see if it heats up any better.

oh, I Have been in the 150 quite a few times and never noticed,, I dont think you have a lot to worry about, I would do a longer journey and see what it does, before I spent any dosh on it, when my stat went on my 1.8, I "THOUGHT" the heater was still working ok,, un till I changed the stat, now the heat from the face vent is almost to hot to put my hand in front of when on full blast, temp guage 87.

My needle on the dash starts to register when the water temp is 70 C. I know this as I can watch the temp reading on the trip computer and aynthing below 70 C does not register any needle movement on the dash. CDTi 150.

The water passes through the heater before it is hot enough to open the 'stat. Once it is hot enough the 'stat opens and then passes thruogh the radiator. If your 'stat is permanently open the water will be overcooled, if it is shut you will overheat. All explained in the haynes manual. Diesel opening temp is 92 degrees, 2.2 petrol is 82 degrees. HTH.
