    We get alot of training at our place of work off mines rescue(breathing apparatus, confined space etc etc) and these guys are the top of the tree in terms of what they do - so i have nothing but respect for these guy, would i mine? Yes i would, if the conditions and cash were good!

    I wouldn't go down a mine. With Chile and China, it's down to Health and Safety shortcomings. Bit surprised at new Zealand though. Though TBF explosions can happen anywhere.

    Accidents like the one in NZ were all to frequent over here...ah em about 70 yrs ago.

    That's why you never heard of explosions in the uk since mines & quarries act got tough, things like dust suppression & suppression equipment was always in place when required & methane gas was correctly monitored. my mining years were a good time with a good pay & right laugh.

    Yes! Ed, kersley was the next one just a few short miles away but shut a number of years ago. ('the mill' used to cut upto 16' ''yes foot'' coal seam).
