Winter tyres???

My wife will be using her car late at night and some early mornings and does around 100mile a day in her Insignia, thinking of getting her some winter tyres.... is it ok to just put them on the front? Im wondering this as we dont really get scandanavian winters its just as a precaution...

I always thought it was best to have the eat tyres on the rear, that's why they put new tyres on rear? (front wheel drive)

Why not, they're bit more expensive and noisier, but supposedly better grip in lower temperatures.. Tyres with a more aggresive tread pattern and lower operating temp would suffice, cant see the point in driving around in full snow treads with metal nobules in 'em, like you say, Shropshire is hardly scandinavia..

Me, Im happy with all season tyres, just choose to drive slower if roads are a bit iffy..

Apparently when temperature is below 7 degrees the performance of a normal tyre is drastically reduced, grip level, stopping distances etc this is why i was thinking about getting some... im getting loads of emails from the tyre fitting companys i have used at the moment about it and there is also a lot more people stocking them.... they arent snow tyres but will work better than normal tyres in snow too.

Last year when the salt ran out the grip was awful and even damp frosty mornings its not good, she tends to drive on cross country routes too so im just trying to make it a bit safer....

could drive faster and keep the tyre temps up like F1 drivers????! =0/

I've never had any problems driving in fresh snow
For this you want to have "new" tyres on the rear and front tyres with no less than 4mm of tread

Winter tyres are a false economy
Simply take the day off work

In deep snow fit chains, but remember to remove them when the snow ends!

Last year the main issue was the compacted snow on ice
Again, forget driving on nomrla road tyres as it is impossible

You need the maximum average tread
The rears have no directional control so need more than the front

All four or nothing imo. Just on the front means the back may step out if you brake hard. there are some excellent vids covering this subject on youtube.
