I had a LWB 97 model and wouldn't recommend one tbh. Mine needed rewired in certain places as it nearly caught fire due to cables rubbing. I would recommend a 3.0 isuzu trooper which i have also owned and it was an excellent vehicle.

I would go for the facelift model, after 1999/2000. The missis has a 2.2dti Frontera Sport and in the five years she has owned it, it has only cost her for servicing and a couple of tyres and has been very reliable. The pre facelift did suffer many issues, not least that the are on leaf springs and handle like a tractor.

I think the last facelift change was from 2002 model onwards.. (bonnet and grill revamped & different alloys) and they look the best in my opinion.. But if you need cheaper older one, then I'd say get a late 98 onwards model.. DTI's can be mappped I beleive for extra oomph.. Petrol ones Ive been told are very reliable and not too bad fuel wise, except the 3litre V6 which is really thirsty..

98 on is the way to go. The early ones were really bad

On the whole, many mechanics view the Frontera as a cow to work on...

As already said, try to aim for as recent as possible (facelift), however for true reliability, go for the Duty Trooper... say..the 2.8 TDi

Alternatively there is the Long wheelbase Trooper Citation, which is the equivalent of the Vauxhall Monteray.

For economy aim for a mid-size diesel... too small, and progress will be sluggish... on the bigger engines, then economy will obviously be poor. And petrol - well get a mortgage for that !!

spent 16 years working at ibc where they were made
the best engine by far was the 2.8 turbo diesel - good economy for a big engine and enough power to pull the 1.5 tonnes of vehicle

I had a 2L petrol Frontera Sport with the soft top.

Great looking car but extremely gutless and the interior build quality was not very good. For some reason the indicator stalk was on the right instead of the left. A funny thing to mention but it kept catching me out!

On the plus side it had cool alloys and fat tyres. I thought I looked the business (I was 18 at the time!)

indicator stalks are on the right instead of left on most jap cars, was the frontera a rebadged izuzu cos that would explain the jap layout!

the early ones as above mentioned were completely unreliable, and had a poor reputation, the newer ones are far better!
