    Default 1.9cdti black smoke/smell

looking for some help folks if possible from the vectra experts

over last while my 51k 06 plate 150 cdti has became a bit smelly if i sit downwind. it is a weird smell which i can't really describe too well but it is maybe unburnt diesel or an oily type smell is best i can do.

over last while i've noticed a few weird things starting to creep up on the car. i've owned it since new with FVSH since.

    1. the smell mentioned above at idle has only been there last 7/8 months
    2. there seems to be a lot of black smoke if i put foot down 2500 ish revs upwards. if i sit and cruise i never get any smoke. if i accelerate normally i never get smoke either and none up hills etc when driving sedately.

lately i think it has been getting worse and last night in my rear view mirror i had an idiot right on my bumper so i accellerated to pull past next car and get in out way-man what a lot of smoke. car never went above 3000 revs but was pouring out smoke (black i assume but was pitch black at night so hard to say 100%)

the performance is still good from the car so unsure what to do????

suggestions gratefully received and any links to how 2's if possible would be massive help if you think it is worth checking.

    cheers

little update-cleaned out the boost sensor-was not as bad as i thought it would be but it was sooted up anyway. had a quick blast and can't see smoke now when revving it hard but i had to just it with street lights as no cars were behind me-sods law.

it is defo better than it was though.

is it working taking the EGR off and cleaning?

FWIW i looked at the swirls and the bar is still on but all have evidence of dirt around them but all are about the same so happy it's normal wear and tear on that one....reasonable?

    cheers

The oil and dirt around the swirl flap bearings shows that intake air is leaking from around the bearings due to wear. This is where your Diesel/oil smell is coming from.

thanks for that-i cleaned it off last night with some high pressure carb spray. it wasn't as bad as some of the pics i've seen on here so i'm happy it is ok for now (as ok as those swirls can be i guess). i should add the swirls still seem to operate normally as they move instantly when engine is started.

also i should have mentioned the smell is out the exhaust as i can smell it most at back of car-with that in mind you think that the bearings is still the cause? it is not there often and not a bad smell-just noticed it now and then and on small journeys really.

any ideas what else i can check for the smoke problem assuming the boost sensor clean out hasn't cured?

    cheers

The smell from the exhaust I find varies depending on where I fill up, if I use BP the car smells different at the rump to if I use Jet for example
(and before I get accused of sniffing back ends, I notice this when I bring the car out the garage and close the door behind me)

As for the EGR the miles are on your side but if you were in an exploratory mood it would do no harm at all.
Also these car's do soot up a lot if driven gently and only clear their lungs if given a good hard run.
But, if none of these seem to be the issue, then you need to look at the Turbo as oil passing the seals is another source of smoke sadly.

    cheers derek.

i popped one of the boost pipes off and there is certainly some dirty oil residue in there. with that said this is my 5th vectra diesel in a row (i've had all the diesel engine varients) and they all have had this to some extent so i'm sure the turbo although "worn in" is not worn enough if that makes sense. my only other 2 diesels not vauxhall both had the same crud i'll call it in the boost pipes. i would bet just about all motors have that unless i'm the most unfortunate guy on earth with blowers

if i plant foot the power is still there so not sure where to look at next.

the car has spent probably 40k of the 51k on it at 70mph on mway. i very rarely thrash it but last few days i've purposely been "giving it some" to see if i can clear it out as it were, maybe i should do that more often as i simply never do it. i can count on one hand the amount of times that car has seen 4k plus since i bought it new.

    cheers

go for the EGR clean for sure!, follow the 'how 2' & do the drill the elec solenoid bit also, make sure you clean the 'hole' in the manifold where the egr bolts onto , it usually gets quite blocked to the point its blocked off!, just be carefull not to loose the 'oval' gasket when undoing the 2 13mm bolts (the ones facing downwards).
