Default Anpr cams in civilian cars

Iv'e recently learnt from my daughter that one of her teachers has an ANPR camera in his car,and he actually drives around at night looking for suspect cars, now as far as i know this is an ordinary citizen with the capability to catch someone driving without insurance and the rest of it.
I myself am not unduly worried by this and have nothing to fear as i am fully legal in every respect, however what i am concerned about is the fact that this is being done sneakily with a big brother accent in abundance, and surly if this is the case the public should be made aware of the fact.

??Has anybody else heard about this,?and what are your views on the matter.

I don't see how a civilian would have access to the PNC, which is what the ANPR is linked to. MID could maybe be linked to, as there are some public outlets on the web, but not PNC as that is obviously very confidential.

It depends on which database is being used
The public can have access to the database that contains a list of "expired" vehicles but it is about 7 days out of date
This database also contains other information relating to the vehicle, but that is where it ends
It does NOT contain any personal information, simpy advises the status of the vehicle
In order to check why the vehicle has a marker further enquiries have to be conducted

Three of the petrol stations I operate use Shark ANPR
This database is updated daily (one day behind)
Again it only warns of a vehicle
We then have to contact the company to find out the latest status

Its only a problem if you have something to hide. If this sort of thing helps to catch uninsured drivers etc then i'm all for it.

Almost as bad as the person that was driving around in a marked Ambulance, drawn attention by not having insurance!

Think I saw that, on one of the police programs, astravan sized vehicle, claimed all sorts of excuses and had a range of uniforms in the back?

ha, car crime vigilante. whatever floats their boat, can't see that there's any harm in that as long as personal details of motorists are not disclosed -- but I'd have to call BS on this one. where would she get an anpr camera from? they don't sell them in argos last time i checked.
