    Default Dodgy Alternator??

I have a 2007 cdti 150bhp auto Estate which has covered around 60k. Today on the way to collect my son from school as I pulled onto the kerb all the lights on the dash dimmed and flickered and several bulb out warnings popped up. As I straightened my wheel the lights completely disappeared and the car stopped. I tried to restarting the car and the battery was flat. This week I gave done around 400 miles majority long runs (20 mile+).

I phoned the breakdown chap who came out. Engine off battery was measuring 12.05v. With engine running it went to 12.38v. If revved it went to 13v. He therefore diagnosed the alternator and towed me home. I have an aftermarket warranty which covers this so not that fussed about cost so it's going to garage in the morning.

Do you guys agree with his diagnosis? The garage us 3 mile away so charging battery now off the car and hoping it'll get me there tomorrow.

Sounds about right. A working alternator should be showing 13.5-14.4v at idle.

Alternator fail. Took it to Nationwide Autocentre who deal direct with warrantydirect. Total bill of circa £500. They tried to get a new battery for me but warranty company said no. I priced the alternator up at £301inc vat from main dealer (exchange basis) so probably cheaper to have taken it there. Not my money though and another good show for warranty direct for £24 a month with £0 excess.
