    Default Installing a car lighter

    Hi guys

As a first time car owner I recently purchased a used Vectra C from 2003. Aside from a few minor problems (which were fixed by the dealer) I LOVE the car.
But I realized that there is no lighter in the front. There is one on the back of the arm rest, but it's a bit too far from my GPS.
There is a plastic cover next to the ash tray and under that there is a hole for a lighter to be installed. I purchased this lighter that I hope to be able on install: http://www.thansen.dk/product.asp?c=...&pn=1215917961 It came with a red wire and the clerk told me to attach the one end to the bottom of the lighter, but where should I attach the other end? I have never worked on cars before and have no idea how to do this, but I'm willing to learn

Hi and welcome (Hej og Velkommen)

You can get a OEM accessory socket from Opel or Oem cigligther from opel to.. As you also can get the correct blanking plate to fit with that... if correct parts it takes like 5 minuts to put in..

The center is Positive.. and the "skin" is negative.. but dont you have the plug underneath for the socket?

That hole should have either a lighter or a power socket (same difference but covered over and no actual lighter, just the 12v socket. Normally, a red wire would be live, most I've seen are a bullet connector to the centre of bottom of lighter. The body of the new lighter would need earthing somewhere, generally a big spade connection on the bottom or side of lighter. Sure someone will be along with definite info on Vecs.

There is a slight difference between the power socket and ciggy socket. The power socket circumference is slightly smaller and won't allow you to fit a ciggy lighter inside it. Nor will it let you fit some of the LED torches either. eg, LED lenser.

Thanks for the fast responses and the welcome

I didn't see a plug underneath (will check again tomorrow just to make sure), but there is a white rectangular plug-like thing underneath the ash tray. I don't know what it is but it surely looks like it's made for electrical installations. I can upload pictures tomorrow if that would help.

Naturally, the best (and most aesthetic) solution would be to buy the original parts from Opel. Do you know a good and reliable online shop that sells Opel/Vauxhall spares?

Nope no online except Ebay.de (you can use the blanking plate from a VX, as its for the wrong side) so you have to look on the german..

I dont know what you expect of price from the lokal Opel dealer, but think to remember the accessory socket is about 150DKK and then the blanking plate.. unless you want Cig-lighter, but probaly same price.

Great, I'll give them a call tomorrow. 150DKK or so is pretty cheap. Thanks a lot, Ken

Wonder if that's why it accepts my satnav and phone chargers, but doesn't like my tyre inflator? Sorry, hijack.

Just modded mine, used the original pre-face ciggy lighter socket and backlit ring, with the facelift spring loaded flap cover and new trim piece with thumb cutout. Sooo much nicer than that silly cigarette lighter we never use sticking up and still all lights up lovely.
