Springs breaking is very common, mainly due to speed bumps, pot holes and maybe poor material construction of the spring itself.
Front pair on my Signum was about £250, snapped on boxing day and no-one else could get any. Personally, if it happened again a set of lowering springs all round would be cheaper.
Yep. My driver's side spring broke on Easter Sunday a few years ago.I had Eibach Sport Springs fitted - same length (as SRI/GSI), I believe and similar rating but much better quality and heavier construction (thicker steel). The handling has improved as a result as well.

Fella, how is it possible that you're a Full Member on here and yet you haven't heard the many, many, many tales of broken springs? lol. Probably the second most common complaint, after "My 1.9 diesel is proving just a teeny bit problematic...."
My front suspension makes a funny noise when going over speed bumps, its like a noise when you sit on a leather sofa, its hard to describe really. How can you tell if there are cream crackered, as I have had a look at mine but can not tell.
Its very clear if the springs are snapped - there is a bit missingyou have 4 so there will be another one to compare the basic looks with.
However yours is a different problem so should really be in a different thread. But, its either - drop links, arb bushes or the rad mounts.
Jonsey sounds like you have a problem with the Anti Roll bar Bushes or Link arms on the front.
