vectra active, gearbox whining very loud

Hi, I have a vectra active 1.8 on a 53 plate. the gearox stated whining about 2 weeks ago. It has quickly got much louder and the whining keeps changing volume and pitch. I have been told it needs a new gearbox. The mechanic has told me to take my car to him so he could tell me what gearbox I need to order. i dont think my car will make it to his garage then back home then back to the garage again. I just wondered if any1 could tell me what gearbox I need and where best to get it from. Thank you, Antony
