Default 1.9 CDTi loss of power problems

My 06 plate 1.9 CDTi with @53,000 on the clock developed a loss of power below 2,000rpm last week. I had it checked out at the garage and they found a split solenoid pipe which they replaced but this didn't help. I then removed and cleaned the EGR valve and boost sensor as per this thread http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=101508 but that hasn't helped either. The symptoms are:

When the car is first started (whether hot or cold) there is virtually no power below 2,000rpm and the turbo doesn't come in until 3,000rpm. After I have been driving for a while (approx. 20+ miles), it gets much better with just a slight loss of power up to 2,000rpm and the turbo coming in at 2,500rpm. I say whether hot or cold because I can drive until the problem goes, stop the car, restart and it is back again.

Yesterday, whilst driving and waiting for the problem to go, the car/spanner light came on and the problem instantly disappeared, BUT the car started kicking out a lot more smoke. I stopped the car for a while, started again and the light had gone, smoke had gone and problem was back again.

Also, I think I can smell exhaust fumes in the car.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Find out why the "car/spanner light" came on (get code read). Exhaust fumes may mean a problem with Exhaust/EGR system or possible turbo problem (leaking joints).

It suggests to me that has the car warms up the leak gets better and the car performs better (more turbo boost) and then when the exhaust cools the leak gets worse.

It's a 150. Yesterday, I had driven it for a while and it was ok, then I stopped for about 5 mins and started again and the problem was straight back, so I'm not sure if it is a warm/cold issue/

check the 2 vaccume pipes at the front right of the engine, I know you said you had a pipe replaced but which one?

also check the thich black pipe near the dip stick see if the bolt from the dip stick has worn a hole in it.

if you can smell exhaust fumes, then have you tightened the egr back up fully and made sure gaskets are clean.....

even a tiny gap will lead to the symptoms you describe...

i'd strip my egr again if i were you

I've checked the pipes and they all appear ok. I cleaned the gaskets but I suppose it could do with new ones. The thing is, it's the same problem as before I took the EGR valve off.

Have you also dismantled the solenoid bit of the EGR and cleaned that? They can corrode.
Sometimes it is necessary to replace the EGR as a sticky or seized valve can cause the solenoid to fail.

Yes, I took the EGR valve apart and cleaned the solenoid bit. It's back in the garage tomorrow so I'll see what happens. It's worse when cold but not much better when warm. When it's cold, it will hardly move.

Default i have the same problem

i have the same problem with mine, ive got the 1.9 120, i had mine plugged in it said fuel metering soleniod valve circuit range/ performance, ive phoned dealers and they dont know what sensor i need to change or anything , nobody seems to know where this sensor lives or how to get one, a guy in lookers parts said it was the boost sensor on the inlet manifold, i changed that and made no difference! so far its had a new clutch and flywheel, new egr valve full service, boost sensor , and still no joy!!!
