    Default Possible MPG Issues

    Hi guys,

New here so I hope you don't mind me being cheeky and diving in and asking my first question!

I picked up my new Vectra on Monday, it is a Hatchback 1.9CDTi, late 2008, auto.

At the moment the trip computer says I have 230 miles to go until I am empty, averaging 25-26MPG. If this is right then I would have 10 gallons of fuel in the tank still (ish) however I only have half a tank?!

I think it is wrong either way because I am not hammering it at all (although the power is nice) and was wondering if there was a way to fully reset the trip computer (I have done the 4 seconds thing) as it might be a bit confused?!

Not sure if this is the norm for this engine with this gearbox (I hope not) or if the trip has got itself all confused!!

    Thanks guys

230 miles is about right to lowish if the guage is showing half full, but the average mpg would be terrible for the CDTi, even given that it is automatic. My car is a manual 1.9 (150), I am averaging about 46mpg. I thought the vectra was replaced by the Insignia early to mid 2008?

Mine is a May 2008 CDTi 150 maunal Vec getting 52 mpg. That sounds low - 760 miles on £60 last weekend.
Insignia phased in on 58 plate I think - I've seen a few 09 plate Vectras tho

Your average MPG seems dreadful. on the CDTi's you should be getting between 38 and 48mpg average depending on your driving style/road type.

Having around 230miles left with half a tank sounds about right.

To reset the on board computer figures, put it on Average MPG, hold the left arrow on the radio for a few seconds and it should change first to all zeros and then to asterisks

One thing with the average MPG counter is that it doesn;t take a lot to drop the average but its really hard to increase it!

It could have been built way before it was registered.

I thought the MPG was a bit rubbish, even for an autobox. Definately agree with the comment about easy to drop it, hard to raise it!!

Will reset it again and see what happens, glad that about 230miles on half a tank isn't so bad though.

I am definately trying to drive sensibly, my Astra did not have this computer so I was guessing how much I had left, now that you can see how much damage is being done (in real time!!) to your bank balance, I am a bit more obsessed

    Cheers lads

Agree with the comment about the average reading. Was on 46mpg, I towed my caravan on an hour tow and it droped to 38mpg. Despite driving for days without the caravan, with the instant counter registering much better figures than 38, it took age to pull the average back up to around 46!

Best way to up the initial average is reset then take it for a fairly longish drive on Dual Carriageway with a light foot. This should give you a good average MPG then do your normal driving and see if it drops dramatically.
Once i have filled my up i do about 20 miles down the local Dual Carriageway. normally end up with about 50 MPG this then normally drops to around 42 MPG for town work etc. But mine is a manual estate 1.9CDTi

I always thought that when you fill your tank up the computer calculates from the previous information it has stored. If that is correct, then your figures will be calculated from the way that the previous owner/driver drove the car.
You should start to get a truer reading if you fill the tank up and zero all the figures and start from scratch. Then you should see a change in your mpg. FELIXX.

That is what i do zero out but then do as in my previous post, if you only drive through town back home after zero out it will be a very low average reading somewhat frightening figures.

Yep,no argument there, but,no matter what you try to do to make the numbers look good,if you've got a big size ten right foot then you're wasting your time
even bothering with the computer fuel figures in the first place!!.FELIXX.
