    Default VOSA Traffic Enforcement Vans

What are these? Saw one sitting on a bridge above A9. I've seen speed camera vans, ANPR vans and DVLA tax check vans but what is a VOSA van doing on a bridge? No cops in sight.

vosa normally are after poorly maintained HGVs so although it is a cash cow for westminster they do a good job on checking HGVs are safe and we have all seen some that are not

VOSA are now able to stop ANY vehicle on the road for the purpose of a roadside check. They normally concern themselves with the 'on the spot' inspection of HGV's for roadworthiness, load security/weight restriction breach, drivers hours/tacho checks. There aim is predominently road safety, and for this reason they are a good thing.

If you run a tight ship of a haulage firm or your MOT station is working to the book, you have nothing to fear from VOSA. The only people that will fall foul and end up shelling money out, are the people who disregard good vehicle husbandry and thus risk putting other road users in danger. So if it is a Government money making scheme, then it is one (about the only one ), that I agree with.

These vehicles are specifically looking for vehicles being used on the road whilst untaxed
The Registered Keeper is then sent a notice, using a vehicle on the road whilst untaxed

No they aren't. Thats not in their remit, and they certainly aren't SPECIFICALLY for that. VOSA is an executive branch of the Department for transport, standing for Vehicle Operator Services Agency. They are concerned with vehicle safety. They intercept vehicles on the road and display 'Follow Me' signs. They are taken to a place of inspection and the various checks carried out. If the vehicle doesn't have a valid VEL, then VOSA will inform the Police who in turn inform DVLA. VOSA have no power to send notices of that nature, they come from DVLA, who will then claim back tax to the date when the vehicle was last legally taxed.

VOSA mobiles don't have ANPR equipment of any nature. The only cameras they have on board are the little things in the Traffic Examiner and Vehicle Examiners pocket for taking pictures of items that are a cause for concern on a vehicle, and for evidential purposes.
