    Default Clutch judder

My 1.8VVT has been suffering with clutch judder from cold over the last few weeks. I've had the car from new, 2 1/2 years old, 12,000 miles. The car was at dealers today and they've told me a crankshaft oil seal may have failed and leaking oil as there appears to be oil under clutch housing, although no oil is dripping on driveway. It's booked in to get the clutch replaced in a fortnight but they say I might have to pay if put down to driver abuse. WTF??? Surely has to be a warranty claim.

usuall practice andy, they will check clutch plate, pressure plate, release ect.if they find any unusuall wear or week springs ect they will try and put it down to driver abuse, they mostly get away with it too.

Still don't see how a leaking crankshaft oil seal can be put down to driver abuse. I did point out to the guy on the service desk that I have been a driving instructor for 29 yrs since I was 21 and normally get 60 - 80,000 mls from a clutch. Will just have to wait and see.....

My 1.8, '06 SRI has the same clutch judder you talk about but goes after the first few miles, thats done 41,000 miles though. Interestingly my parnters 1.8 '06 Astra suffers the same problem, but also goes after a few miles ?

I get the very same judder on my 120,000mile 05 plate Sxi and as per the above posts its only for the first few miles. I've read on here before it's often down to the materials used in the clutch and its a common problem on these cars. I'll worry when the clutch fails
Don't let the stealer make you pay. Do a search on here and get your ammo ready for when you go back.

My clutch is still good at 153,000 miles. It used to judder occasionally, but hasn't done it for a long time now. If it starts to judder, I found that re-pressing the clutch pedal and releasing again often prevented it happening again.

It is pretty weird, and I never got to the bottom of what caused it.

You need to be careful when taking it back to the dealers for warranty work, because they will say anything that they can to make it look like driver abuse.

This is a very common fault on the 1.8's and they 'will' know this. Point out to them that you now know it to be a very common fault and demand to see the leaking oil seal and contaminated clutch disc.

Just had a phone call from VX customer relations. She said clutch is warranted for 18,500 mls and as long as crankshaft seal failure is not down to driver abuse should be ok. I don't see how anything a driver does can cause a crankshaft seal to fail?

"driver abuse" includes the fitting of non-standard engine parts.

There was an instance that I remember, when stood at the service counter in my local VX dealership, of a guy who was almost in tears because they said that the reason his DMF had failed on his nearly new Astra was because he had a tuning box fitted....

A lesson learnt there I think!
