    Default HID legality

Just had a quick look on DFT website in regards to HIDs and found this

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

I still don't think it gives a clear yes or no in regards to it, but mine are still being fitted!

That fact sheet only covers old style reflector headlights not Eliptical lens headlights fitted to the Vec.

the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb

In a nutshell, yes this has been gone over more times than I've put fuel in my car. Fitting an HID kit by itself is illegal. If you add in headlight washers and self-levelling headlights, then you're fine. Althgouht the elipsoidal lens is the correct type for xenons, the headlights still aren't designed for them from the factory - the factory xenon headlights are different.

As long as you don't put a silly colour bulb in however, and aren't blinding anyone, you won't get pulled by the police or fail your MoT.

The rest is up to you.

if you look on the lights.. and look on the approval markings.

    Oem Hallogen (prefacelift)

    Oem Xenon (prefacelift)

that means the headlamps are approved to:

    Halogen Highbeam
    Halogen Lowbeam
    Xenon Lowbeam
    Sidelights

Notice the difference on the approval? excatly, there isnt any.

So a HID kit are legal alleast on prefacelift if you fit

E approved HID kit and Bulb
    Headlamp washer
    Automatic headlamp leveling.

To add more confusion, I'm sure I heard that the law changed in March '06 regarding HID's ie it became alot stricter. Maybe it explains kenp's post too.

yes my post explains only that the prefacelift vectra headlights are approved xenon or halogen are approved to the same.

All the rules are in first link, as its EU-law, pretty basic, only problem on many cars is that the headlights isnt approved, and virtualy impossible to find legal hid kids.. (Not ONE kit on eg. hids4u are approved (E-marked Bulb, the ballast and igniter is, but not the bulb and that needs also to be approved)

In other words it is legal to fit them to the prefacelifts?

To be fair at most it's gonna be a 30 quid fine in most cases. How many folk on here have been stopped or failed an MOT though. Think a poll may be needed
