    Default Running Problems

I am having mega problems with my "52" Vectra C 1.8. Been in the garage few times and still not got to the bottom of the problem.....
About 3 months ago car was running rough (misfire and stuttery under normal driving) and having a real problem on cold start up. Replaced EGR Valve, Coil Pack, Plugs and air filter. Was slightly better but still not right! Eventually the cold start problem got just as bad as before. Last trip to the garage they told me the EGR valve was faulty so they had to replace it. Car actually feels worse than it did before. Also said that the misfire on intermittent cylinders is caused by a knackered engine basically. (Valves or something and not worth fixing........replace engine!!!)
Been looking through forums etc to see if I could solve problem as I dont believe the engine is knackered!
My question is would it be worth trying to blank off the EGR Valve to see if this helps? A how 2 would be much help!
Getting a new Insignia next year so only really needs to last me the winter.
Please help as the wife runs it. I am offshore most of the time and all she ever does is moan about the car when I am away!!!

Is the MIL or car with spanner light on? Have you got any fault codes?

Have you done the pedal method of fault code reading - it is free and doesn't need any equipment at all?

If the EGR has been changed, as you say it has, was the software checked for it.

IIRC, I remember reading somewhere that the EGR was modified and newer EGR's require a software update in the ECU.

Possibly something to take into consideration.

The EGR was deleted completely on these engines from about 04 - requires new software.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
I used my mates code reader a while back and it came up with P0170 iirc which the garage then confirmed and changed an O2 sensor. Didnt really help much except the tickover was more stable. mgmt light on pretty much permanently, when the garage has it they reset it then after running a while it comes back on. Last time they had it in they said that they were getting different codes, (after they had put a new EGR in) something to do with the cylinders throwing up codes but not the same one all the time, like irregular firing on different cylinders or something like that. I think when I get home I will borrow my mates reader again and try suss it out myself as I am sick of the garage bills and not really getting anywhere. Thing is I bought the car with 52k on it and used it as a taxi for a year and has now done 130k so cant really expect too much from it but all the time I was using it it ran fine it just seems to be from around the summer time that it has started playing up. Maybe just too many miles on it. Might just have to bit the bullet and get a new one! Bummer as I really liked it!!! When it was running ok obviously!!!

Have you tried the pedal method for recoving fault codes for free and no equipment? Link posted above.

P0170 may be caused by lots of things other than O2 sensor. Do you have any air leaks in the intake or exhaust system?

My mate has a code reader so will borrow that when I get home n see wot it says!
Nae checked for air leaks and just had a new exhaust put on last time in garage. This may be a stupid question but is there a way for testing air leaks rather than just listening or looking at state of hoses?

Just a thought here after looking through t'internet at some stuff!
My motor temp gauge sits at absolute zero when driving and only comes up the gauge when sitting with engine running, then goes down again when you get back up to speed. I thought maybe water pump but that was done not that long ago and shouldnt be knacked again so if the thermostat is knackered it would do this yes??? So then would that throw up the P0170 error as the MAF sensor thinks the engine is constantly needing more fuel!
I could be totally howling at the moon here but it was something I was thinking about last night!!!
    Anyone got any ideas
