Default Vectra 2.0 T service advice.

    Hello all

I am going to be servicing the car myself to learn how things work (economics degree not very useful with cars) so I'm after some advice.

Car not due a service yet but I want to get the bits ready.

I will do: oil plus filter, fuel filter, pollen filter and spark plugs.

Is there anything I should get along side these? Ties, plugs bungs etc etc as I have never done this before; and if so what are the part numbers.

My father in law is going to help me (god bless him).

Any advice for a noob mechanic would be greatly appreciated.

Changing the air filter or changing it for a K&N would be ideal. You could look at changing the gearbox oil aswell. Brake fluid change?

LOL cheers guys but I have managed to alter the filter and replaced it with the Courtney Motorsport one (which I believe is pipercross may pref one) and managed to do the airbox mod and remove the gunk from the plug in my washer jet bottle last weekend. Took me a while but I got there and was rather chuffed (we all start somewhere).

I have down loaded the change spark plug how 2 (pls dont laugh I said I was a noob) and will get my father in law to show me oil filter and oil change.

Pollen filter I have found (took a while lol) so thats ok to.

Just thinking me be a) a noob and b) heavy handed should I get any additional bungs or cable ties etc that I may break?

Break fluid was done at 39K and just done 54K is there any need to change?

there is nothing to break bud.. i always carry cable ties in my car anyway just in case something happens..

Seems you have all you need, are your exhaust rubber hangers ok,, can be worth a check, they are cheap. its not really a service item but worth replacing the rotten ones to prevent any rattles etc..

If your brake fluid is quite new i guess your brake pads are in good shape..

Yes passed MOT with no issues few months ago just before I got it and I have done 2k in three months.

I really love this site as I just found the PART NUMBER section with all the part numbers!

Just want to keep on top of things and learn a little, hate being conned by stealers (not all mechanics as my father in laws friend offered to do whole lot with stamp for 50 quid if i got the parts).

That's the idea. Gonna learn how to do wifes 1.9 tid 93 Saab to. It's the 120 bhp version so imagine it's the same as the vx one more or less.

Just joined saabscene so will find out I guess.

Just had her big service done (cambelt etc) which Saab wanted £748 for and father in laws mate did that plus service plus mot with parts he got for £390. The price variation is huge lol.

Just one little extra, if you're changing your oil, you probably want to replace the sump plug washer (little rubber ring that goes on the sump plug). Most people forget these (would've done myself if it wasn't for Dean last time we did mine).

And the plug itself - less chance of it rounding off next time if you fit a new one each time.
