Default Handbrake making loud plastic/creaking noise

Over the past few weeks the handbrake has been making a loud creaking noise when applied. It's almost like the sound of too much tension in a spring and the noise seems to be coming from just under the plastic cover. It has made this noise in the past but not all the time. It has been much worse since it had a new brake pipe fitted to get though it's MOT. Think it was the rear pipe so could it have been something the garage has done?? What the hell is that noise all about??

usually its the self adjuster slipping and the cure is to replace the whole handbrake assembly as they dont sell the adjuster seperately.

If the adjuster has gone the handbrake assembly costs around £130 but to fit it you have to drop the whole exhaust from the cat back

How much!! Do you think it might have been something the garage have done?? Is the handbrake in danger of failing if left like this??

Yes at times. Just been searching on here and it seems the handbrake cable may be at its maximum adjustment and needs tightening. Might ask a good mate who's a mechanic to look at it. Also read that if you pump the brake pedal couiple of times with engine running and then pull handbrake on few times very hard this can also sort it. Gonna try this in morning.

The handbrake cable could have stretched but isnt adjustable so you could try replacing that but best bet is get it checked by a mechanic and go from there

Mine has been doing this for a month now. Makes no noise though.

It can be normal one time, then next time it will pull up really high, then next time goes back to normal again.

Been told it might be a sticky brake piston.
