Default 18's alloy to 16" Steel Wheels? Steelies Better?

I have had 18" VXR replicas on my car for the past year and the tyres are now worn out. With the price of a tyre that I would be happy to use on my car, I have decided to put my old steel 'fake alloys' on because they all have almost brand new Bridgestone tyres on. (A far cheaper choice because its free!)

I think I actually prefer the steelies. They don't look quite so good, but they are soooo much better. The vibration in the dash and roof is gone (seems to be cased by the low profile, high load tyres). It is sooooo quiet now, and you can drive over cats eyes and barely hear them. The car does not stand out as much and I no longer need to bother with stupid locking bolts... If I kurb them, they just get hammered back into shape. The steering is lighter and it does not follow ruts as much now.... You can actually just let the steering wheel for ages and it just goes straight and true.... Before it followed the camber....

I am just tired of the alloys. It does handle better with them on, but I have grown up and no longer feel the need to nail the car anymore, so this is not a problem. The alloys are just expensive, and cause problems.... I think if you do not care about the 'snob' value of them, there is no advantage...

Does anyone else feel the same? Anyone else gone back to steel wheels?

on previous cars I have done the same although I swapped to banded steels.

i also prefer them when winter rolls around. that way my nice alloys can stay clean until the summer season rolls around

i do find low profile and esp cheap low profile tyres give soo much road noise its unbearable. gotta love balloon tyres

Mine were not cheap low profiles. £160 each because they had to be stretched on. I wouldn't buy cheap tyres unless I really could not afford better. They are the most important thing on the car IMO!!

Your first post does not surprise me at all. We tend to follow trends, knowingly or otherwise, so larger, lower profile wheels and tyres it is. We hardly think about it!

But with the way our roads have gone to ruin, 'balloon tyres' will invariably be softer and 'nicer' to drive. Low profile tyres on large wheels look good to my eyes but only on low, suitably kitted cars. On otherwise bog-standard stuff, they look naff.

    Steelies always look cool.

I've got steelies as mine was an ex fleet. Got a set of 17's in the garage but don't want to put them on!
