Unhappy Fascia lights - completely stumped

Hi - ok, finally have to admit i'm labouring on this one -
For reasons far too complicated (and embarrassing) to go into here I took apart the centre console - the CD storage / arm rest thingy - leaving much of the wiring hanging out. Meanwhile I was also jiggerin' around with the panels in the boot chasing a really annoying squeak - so wiring all hanging out there too. It was all working fine - not pretty, but no probs, still driveable - until recently.
Somewhere along the line I must have got a short circuit I think. The instrument lights are out all the time, the centre display works ok showing date, time, radio channel, etc. but the radio dials, heater dials are very dim (weirdly they get brighter when you open the glovebox!), the glovebox light doesn't work and the courtesy light is not working.
I've checked the usual suspects (with a meter, not just by eye) - the passenger side fuses - but they seem to be ok.
Any suggestions for what else to check? - other fuses, front, back or engine bay? The dreaded bcm?
    All suggestions gratefully received.

    Vectra LE, 1.8, 53 plate.

If you've shorted something, then you should check fuse 12 in the panel on the passenger end of the dash.
This is an over-load fuse...this often goes when you accidentally short any of the interior and instrument lighting circuits.

    Other than that - other fuses are F1, F7, F9, F10, F12, F17, F19 and F26.
(If the radio and display are unaffected, then you can ignore F1 and F26.)

Good call, but before doing this re-trace your steps and be sure that the wire is still not trapped and shorted.
