    Default Driver vs Machine

    Fast cars....

So whats more important... the driver... or the car.... or a good mix of both?

I hear so many arguments like:-

My cars 0.010 seconds quicker than yours so its better
My cars a V8 so its better
    My cars blah blah blah....

    Then I hear...

Yeah but he couldnt have been trying
Yeah but if you had the same driver in the other car... different story etc etc

So whats the perfect mix of driver talent and car ability?

I did some work at Camel Team Lotus during the 80's (I'd like to claim I was a test driver, but I used to fix their CAD/CAM system ) They always reckoned that, among the top 20 F1 drivers, the car was 90%, the driver was 10%. This excluded extraordinary drivers like Senna and Schumacher, whose car control was beyond that of most mortals.

I think I disagree with that..,

I've watched Filth Gear Tiff Nedell struggle with an F1 car just to get 1 lap...

I've watched Top Gear Richard Hammond struggle with an F1 car just to get it going and not stall it every time.... the laps were so slow the tyres were cooling off.

So how can that be... if the driver is so unimportant?

ive voted 80% car 20% driver as it was highlighted on 5th gear a year or two ago when they had a danny wallace on to drive an Audi - they taught him how to drive then got audi to turn off all of the driver aids and ..... yep he couldnt even get around the first corner !

0-Large smile ......every time it's driven

Note the "Among the top 20 F1 drivers" bit. Even the lowest driver on the grid is 1000% above us mere mortals.

    Ah.. ok

So basically if you're in the worlds top 20 F1 drivers its the car that wins you the race.

So that means you still have to be a 99.999999% best driver category

Hard to say; some cars are "better" than others (or more suited to the task) no matter who is driving. And vice versa.
