pmsl well mucker if it falls off the axle stands you can KACK yourself anywhere you want .
personaly i would do it there and then (sorry mucker couldnt help myself)

i press the wrong key all the time and spell bad

but to answer your question i usually get a block of wood on them first and either use the recommended jack points or across the front sill by the wheel arch

I think the best place to put the stand are on the specific jacks points (the square holes) I think people cut a block of wood that fits in the hole so that axle stand rests flat on the wood.

yep, I too got a 7.99 set from lidls today, just for when and if I might ever need them.. I initially picked up two boxes of pairs, but then after a while decided to just buy one pair, thinking would I ever need to put my car up on four axle stands?? Is it even safe to do so? Does anybody put a car up on axle stands all round?

If you're using a trolley jack to lift the car then position it next to the standard jacking point, where's there's a flat section of chassis. Don't use the jacking point itself (except when using the Vec's own jack), even with a piece of wood inserted into the rectangular slot, as the wood can crack easilly. Once the car is supported by the trolley jack, you obviously want the axle stands to be positioned a little bit away from the jack otherwise they'll just get in the way of each other. Whether it's the front or the back, look under the corner you're lifting and you'll see strong rectangular box sections of chassis - put the axle stand under one of those.
