Default Black soot/smoke when revving the engine

Hey guys, just joined up today for my girlfriend so go easy, had her vectra 2.2 dti for about 3 months now and recently we have just noticed that when revving the engine or putting your foot down the exhaust kicks out black smoke, when the car is idle and you rev it, it kicks out some soot on the floor.

Ive read it could be numerous things but would anyone else know what the problem could be? Was reading it could be the EGR valve but maybe someone with a bit of knowledge would have a better understanding?

    Thanks very much.

It might just be that it has always been driven "economically" which doesn't burn the soot up and get it out properly.

I would be inclined to try giving it a good run up the A19 at high revs for a bit and see if it clears.

Are you losing boost ? or is the power down ?
Nearly all diesels with chuck out black smoke when being revved hard its just a diesel thing like they say no poke without smoke
But if your losing boost and its chucking loads of smoke out it could be boost pipes check these for cracks and holes

Thans for the swift replies lads, The engine light has came on and the car slowed right down, I had to turn the ignition off and back on again for this to clear, ive tried taking it down the a19 today and it looks like the soot stopped but it then started up again aswell as the black smoke from the exhaust, how would I go about checking the boost pressure? Also I cant access the guide to checking the pipes as it says I dont have enough rights to do this?

Really like this forum by the way, im sure ill be sticking around even tho its our lasses car, everyone seems friendly, unlike some other forums.

Not too sure about the power being down as I only drive it now and again, how would I be able to tell? Doesnt help I have a faster car so it seems slower to me anyway.

When was it last serviced. Black smoke usually means overfueling which can be too much fuel or not enough air to fuel mix. Check your air filter and have a look at all pipes to check for cracks in them. Best checking basics first.

If engine light is on then you might be best to read codes this might be an easy way to tell what's wrong instead of guessing

Ok guys im back, took the cover off the engine and found this

As you can see there is a big slice in the pipe im pointing at, what is this pipe? I did notice the engine bay was rather sooty im thinking this is due to this pipe? Another thing I noticed was when we revved the car the pipe im pointing too expanded and alot of air or fumes kept coming from it.

Sorry cant get links to work. Copy and paste them into browser
