    Default alternator

    hi all tested my alternator today and its charging at 12v when running is this right somebody told me it should be 14v...do i need to replace the alternator i had the battery light on yesterday but its gone off now cheers.

    Should be at 14.4 v.

    Did you test this as soon as you started the car? Leave it running a minute then check if still 12v replace.

    usually the battery light comes on when the alternator isnt charging, check as above if it stays at 12v then garage to confirm before replacement but it does sound as if its had it

    cheers does anybody have a "how to" for getting them off cheers

    From 13-14v is about right.
    Depends on the make and rating of the alternator (some are 120A, some Bosch and Lucas ones are 140A).
    My new "Denso" charges at 13.8v.
    12v sounds a bit low with the engine running. Run engine with the fans and headlights on and test with the voltmeter. The voltage will drop for a second or two as you put the electrical items on, but should rise back up to where it was. If it drops into the 11-12v range, and stays there - definitely time for a new alternator.

    There is a "how to" for getting the alternator off in the How2 forums. It's good - only thing is for some cars you'll have to remove the fuel filter crash housing to get the alternator out. Bit tricky, but it's not too bad.
