Default I did the petrol in diesel thing.....

Cant believe i actually done this.

To be fair it was 6.30am

Stuck in £30 of fuel and when i put the nozzle back i thought "Thats pretty cheap for diesel"......"OH S*&!"

Told the nice lady at the forecourt who said i will be the first of many for the day....hmm reassuring Anyways, put the hazzards on, put cones up behind me and phoned the breakdown.

Turned up an hour later to tow it to my work where im friendly with the mechanics. Anyways, after giving 1 of the mechanics £20 for sucking the fuel from the tank into a contaminated fuel container, i stuck £60 of DIESEL to dilute any petrol that was left in their.

Lucky enough i never turned the car over and gave it a good drive home down the motorway so all good. All in from start to finish it cost me £110 so an expensive lesson learned. Sill cant believe i done it though.

Glad you got it sorted ok and with no damage to your engine. I think putting the wrong fuel in is a thing most motorists are worried about.

Have had petrol cars for 10 years since i passed my test. Was just in autopilot mode. Certainly going to be paying more attention in future.

Diesel cars are much quiter today than 15 years back when they knocked the balls off and you knew it was diesel.

Small cars have come into the diesel trend were before they were mainly petrol so it's very common.

When i bought this veccy diesel after owning petrol for 20 years i wrote on the cap in white marker " diesel" stupid i know but it works.

Must admit its something ive never done. My dads new Mundeno has a new fangled built in thingimy bob on the filler cap so you cant make the mistake now. On a separate note they no longer come with a filler cap now either, just this built in fancy valve jobby.

Been there, done it got the T-shirt as they say. Embarrasing thing was that i did it in my works Van--RAC Van.
Anybody reading this--IF you ever do it--NEVER start your engine. If Vauxhall say they have to replace parts--Take it away. There are companies around that specialise in Mobile Fuel Drains. It will cost About £180 and all they do is drain the tank, then the fuel lines. They do recommend replacing the fuel filter, BUT THAT IS ALL. Refill tank and on the way.

I did it yesterday, 17 litres of petrol into the tank before I realised what I was doing (Stupid). Anyway I brimmed the tank with diesel and drove 5 miles home with no ill effects as far as i could see , I then put two hundred MLs of two stroke oil into the tank as well and drove 170 miles to Durham with no apparent problems showing up, so used about a quarter of a tank for that journey and will brim again with diesel before driving home. Will let you all know if any problems come up. The car is a 1.9 16 valve cdti.

I've read up on this before and I think you can get away with around a couple of gallons of petrol mixed with diesel.
With so being use to a diesel over the last 5 years I tried once to put diesel in my petrol Omega I owned last year. Wouldn't have got far as I don't think the nozzle goes in the filler on a petrol tank, does it?

Mick- The normal advice is in an older car that runs a normal Diesel Injection system you can get away with up to 10% mix, But on Newer Diesel engines COMMON RAIL INJECTION or CDTi then its No PETROL at all. Basically Diesel is an oily product, thus lubricates the High Pressure Injection pump, Petrol on the other hand is a cleaner and cleans off any lubrication causing the pump to overheat.
