Default Exhaust possible MOT failure (help please).

Hi all, long time reader dont post much so would appreciate any help.

Recently took my car to a friend of a friends garage for a service. Nice bloke been doing the car for a few years and never been a problem hes always honest and has your wallet in mind before doing work which isnt needed.

I dropped the car off he give me a call alittle later explaining that a rubber pipe on my exhaust has split after the manifold and to replace would cost approx 80quid. I agreed to get work done as he explained it would be an MOT failure, so no probs. He called me back explaining that hes done a few of these on vectras and my exhaust setup is different to what hes seen (great!). He explained the part he ordered is a metal pipe into rubber pipe then back to metal with a connection to go on before the cat (manifold end). Hes taken mine off and there isnt a joint infact the cat is part of the pipe!

He called the parts place and they quoted him 280quid which he said is expensive! He was honest and said if I shop around and look on the net I might find it cheaper and he appreciates that I would buy the cheaper and he would do the work when the MOT comes up for me.

I dont actually know what the part is called and dont want to sound stupid when I call about. Does anybody know the name of the part which I am searching for and has anybody come across this before (vauxhall using different exhaust system setups on the same models)?

    Thanks guys and gals

sounds like the flexi pipe is knackered, do you have a pic of the knackered section? What engine do you have?

There's clamp on ones on ebay or take it to an exhaust specialist and they will have an off the shelf one they can weld in.

could do with seeing a pic of the offending item. I cant think of any rubber pipe on the exhaust of a Veccy, maybe he is getting confused with the intercooler pipes as those are rubber and metal.

Just had my flexi pipe replaced on my one today, Stealers wanted £710 for the front pipe fitted. So found a custom place in northampton who cut out old flexi and welded in new one and when they were there i had it de-cat so new pipe from front to middle cost £90.
