    Default HandBrake Problem

The Handbrake on my car is starting to play up.

Most of the time I apply it and pull it up tight to it's normal level,

But other times it goes slack and it goes up much higher and knocks the arm rest before going tight, but next time I use it it's back to normal again

It's almost as if it's trying to auto adjust but keeps slipping back.

It's not an immediate drama as I always park in gear but does anybody have an idea on whats happending.

    Cheers

I've just had to replace both rear callipers on mine as I had this problem about 1 year ago and never investigated it, hence new calipers now. I could be wrong but what you are describing is the first signs of the piston sticking , if it is it will only get worse then the wheels will drag and squeal . Hth

Mine does the same. The Vectra C handbrake auto-adjusts every time you apply it via a mechanism under the handbrake lever. This can fail intermittently or completely. I can hear (and feel) a clunk as I pull the handbrake on the occasions where the auto-adjustment mechanism has failed and this is when the handbrake lever pulls up further as well.

You can see if this is the problem by chocking the wheels, taking off the armrest, and then operating the handbrakes loads of times while keeping an eye on the auto-adjust mechanism underneath. You will see it slip when it fails and if this corresponds with the handbrake lever pulling up further than normal then that's your problem.

If this is confirmed as the problem then the solution is to fit a new handbrake lever unit.

    Have a read of this...

    Cheers for the link.

I think i'll take it into the dealer. Still got a Network Q warranty on it

    Hopefully this will be covered

BTW when mine slips upwards it does not make any sounds or clonks.
it just surprises me when it travels farther than it should.

It's quite possible it's something else, but there's no point you spending time trying to find the problem as it should be covered by the warranty.

    - i also have exactly the same problem, let the dealer fix it under warranty as it needs a new handbrake assembly at about £130.00 plus the exhaust from the cat back has to come off to replace it

when i apply the brake pedal slighty and pull the handbrake it travels high and easy and holds. but if i dont press the pedal it takes about 6-7 clicks of the handbrake before it holds. Is this normal?
