Default Can one rev a Diesel Vectra engine from under bonnet?

    All,

I remember the days when throttles (well on petrols) used to have a throttle cable and you could move the throttle assembly by hand whilst you had your head under the raised bonnet thus causing the engine to rev. I have a CDTi, my question is, can you do this from this car or is it totally electronic and need someone to press the throttle pedel from within?

    thanks

I think you need to have someone press the accelerator pedal for you.

Throttle cables are a thing of the past and I believe (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that the throttle sequence is now all electronic.

You can't rev a deisel under the bonnet as they are drive by wire, what's more the throttle flap doesn't govern the acceleration in a diesel, pressing the throttle pedal tells the ECU to allow more fuel into the cylinders. It has nothing to do with the throttle plate/body.

Is this a bad thing or good thing? Can't understand how it would work without a Throttle cable?

Deisels can work on a variety of Air/Fuel mixtures (2:1 - 50:1) and therefore a throttle isn't needed. The only thing the plate does in a deisel engine is control emissions.

its done by a sensor on the acelerator pedal , and a signal is sent to the ecu and this then sends a signal to the engine to allow more fuel

They are 'drive by wire'. no cable on petrol engines either (2.2),
electronic signal is sent to the ecu on ' how much ' power is required.
