Question Engine balancing - Is it worth it?

I was reading something in a mag last night (a mag about cars) and there was a place in there advertising engine balancing.. Is this worth doing an why would an owner consider doing it? Would you do it to resolve vibration issues or could it be considered tuning/performance related work to make it more efficient and smoother etc..?

I am looking into it on a tuning perspective to the engine as smooth as possible as i start to raise the bhp again.. I can only see it being of benefit but is it worth it?

Unless your going over 300bhp its not worth it mate and then you'd need uprated liners make it reliable and thats where the big money starts coming in. I'll give you one, balancer shaft deletion That's a 10 bhp mod on the 22SE so should be worth more on the NET.

Aren't you guys talking about totally opposite effects though? Caveman's asked about making the engine smoother and Rushy's talking about taking out the balancer shafts - which would make the engine less smooth...

In the days of Byldenstein's racing Vauxhalls they stated the standard VX engines were so smooth they didn't require balancing, unlike most of the others of the day. Why do you think yours would need balancing?

I doubt that many modern engines would really benefit from balancing. They are built to much finer tolerances than most classic car engines.

You'd do it to raise the red line, im looking as the op's post in regards to performance not smoothness. Getting rid of the shafts on this block doesnt make that much of a difference in terms of how smooth it is. One of the main differences in the astra vxr lump to its forerunner with the same lump is the lack of balancer shafts while still using the exact pig iron lump. You can buy proper gm kits for it, but its an engine out job as you have to slide them out and there isnt enough room while its in the bay.

Sorry if my spelling poo, sausage fingers and a qwerty phone dont mix.

so it doesn't sound like I would benefit from this balancing lark.. I may just give them a call to see what they say about the whole procedure.. the published prices for a 4 vylinder block were about £85 which is not going to break the bank.

It would make a difference, but on a car as heavy as the Vectra C you would not feel the benefit.

But is that not just the balancing? Don't forget the bottom end strip down or are you planning to do that yourself? What are you actually wanting Nige? Are you proper going for it money no object (well within reason) or are you just looking to make things a bit better?

I agree that the use of balancer shafts does keep the ride so smooth up to the red line, as I enjoyed in my old 2.0T. Am I right that it was Saab who pioneered this in their cars, and GM then used it?

The Vectra C is essentially a family car, and balancer shafts give it the smoothness and refinement that makes it so enjoyable to drive.
