Cruising at 60 mph is where most modern engines are most fuel efficient and will return the highest mpg

About 55-60 mph (usually 56mph) usually returns the best fuel figures for most cars.

The best consumption I could get from my 57-reg Astra 1.8 vvt sri was 40mpg at 70mph. Driving very carefully.

On any modern car I've owned any speed over 60mph will see you consumption increasel, that is motorway cruising in top gear.
Also lower speeds, changing gear, stop start type journeys also increase consumption obviously.
I've had 60mpg from my CDTi cruising at 60mph, but that's boring.

Use the cruise control, makes a hell of a difference.

Once you get used to knocking the speed up and down with the buttons, the MPG will surely start to climb.
