    Default 04 vec LS, Y20DTH swirl flap principle of operation

    Hi,Just got this motor 2 weeks ago & getting around to servicing, etc. Cleaned the boost sensor today & it was really clogged up & looking into the manifold i noticed loads of the black stuff, so when time permits i intend to take the manifold off to give it a proper clean.

    Anyway, i found a split vacuum pipe on the swirl flap solenoid which i temp repaired till i get some pipe, road tested & seems a hell of a lot better. Also, as any vacuum leak would affect everything else connected on the same pipework, this would have been affecting the wastegate valve operation.

    Main question is though, when does the actuating solenoid for the swirl flap supposed to come into operation?

    The haynes manual says that it is dependant on engine speeds but i can see no movement of the actuating diaphragm unit regardless of engine speed.

    Sucking on the pipe to the actuating unit operates the linkage, so this tells me that the diaphragm unit mounted on the intake manifold is ok. But if i take the pipe off the inlet to the solenoid valve (the bit on the front with the multiplug above the radiator) nothing happens & i can hear suction escaping from the solenoid exhaust port.

    Seems to be plenty of vacuum from the pump.


    Any thoughts appreciated

    When you rev it you should be able to see it move (Well I could on mine)

    Thanks mate. How many revs did you give it to get it to move?

    Mine doesnt seem to move regardless of revs.

    Hmmmm, i am thinking that the swirl valve solenoid maybe faulty.
