Default High Quality Photography Camera Hire

Prob D knows better than most people but I am hoping to enbark on a unique trip for myself which is a once in a lifetime experience and I need to have the best camera and video technology with me to capture it.

I need a high quality SLR with a huge zoom lens and a decent digital camcorder. I also need lots and lots of space to record alot of images.

Anyone know of any Camera Hire places?

    Many thanks!

Calumet - stores around the country. Manchester probably your nearest. Will rent a huge range of professional gear. Will courier. Rental PDF here. Nikon and Canon SLRs

The Pro Centre - London based but will courier. Nikon and Canon SLRs.

They are basically the two biggest. If you can't find what you want there, you're not going to find it!

Let me know if you need any more info.

How close up? I mean what sort of subject matter are you shooting?

    Other questions....
    • You got a preference for Nikon or Canon? All great cameras but with different layouts. I'm a Canon man now after being Nikon many years ago. I think their Image Stabiliser lenses are the dogs danglies. Nikon now have the same sort of thing, but I think Canon's are better as they have such a head start in that area.
    • Do you necessarily want digital? (if that's what you had been expecting to go for). If you're going away on a long trip you're going to need loooooads of memory cards and ideally some means of offloading them i.e. storage bank or laptop. That itself introduces more faff - and more gear to lug around. You don't want to shoot a whole load of pics over a period of time and leave them on the memory card. That's a bit of a risk.
I still take film cameras if I go away on personal trips.
Obvious advantage of digital is that you have no need to scan anything on your return.
It partly depends on exactly what you're shooting and under what conditions.

If you have time, might be worth a trip to Calumet Manchester to have a hands on with some cameras and see what feels right for you.

Basically D I am planning on going to Chernobyl in the not too distant future. It is a place I have always been interested in and I want to get as much info as I can, but I can only get within 100m of the Sarphogas. There are many areas of interest that I want to get pictures of, but I can't get to them due to the extreme levels of radiation. Hence the need for zoom.

I have only used point and shoot cameras before so what ever you can recommend. I want everything as a digital item so I can have everything on computer, will bring my laptop for backup anyway.

I don't want to lose anything at all obviously but want to make the most of this.

Well it's definitely digital then. If you're near any sort of radiation then film has got a chance of getting fogged.

I'll post up with some suggestions tomorrow or Sunday as I'm off to bed now - up at silly o'clock to get to the SE Meet.
