Default can anyone help with meriva issue?????

howdy peeps. I know that a meriva aint excactly a vectra but thought id try and pick the brains of all the vx techs out there!
I have a 2006 meriva 1.4 16v chain driven petrol. I bought the car just over a week ago with the following faults. Car had a horific misfire cured by a new dis pack and set of plugs (plugs burnt out). Also all the breather system was choked with the usual brown gunk! nice and clear now.
However when the car is idling (really bad at cold start!!!) there is a knock coming from the engine and the idle is rough. When cold and the oil cap removed the knock is heard coming up through the crankcase. I have spoken to the previous owner who informed me that the knock was there for a few weeks and was getting gradually worse when cold but ok when hot. oil level is ok. not checked oil presure but top end not knocking so assuming for now that the pressure is ok. i have been told that the chains are bad for stretching and causing these symtoms. i removed the new plugs and found plug no:1 tip burnt and no:3 plug wet. would i be right in assuming that cam timing could be out and firing at wrong time?? can anyone shed any light on the subject???
    any help much appreciated!!!!

    Vehicle : vectra-c

    Trim : sri

    Engine : cdti

    Year : 2004

    Mileage : 98,000

The 1.4 can have this problem 'when the spark plug torque (tightness) is to low or to high', according to TIS, the correct tightness is essential.
this could also i suppose be a low oil pressure somwhere or a timing issue!, check for the correct grade of engine oil, & spark plug issue first (cheapest).

Give the throttle body a good dose of carb cleaner as that brown gunk really chokes them up, Get an oil change if not done already as once the oil is contaminated with condensation its the only way to get rid of it.

is your chain rattling? I have seen dozens of old chain driven corsas that have jumped a tooth. The z10/12/14xe/xep engines also suffer from camshaft fatigue and i have even seen one with a con rod through the block after 60k! On the plus side, on a corsa i can do one of these engine changes in under three hours.

Is the knock you hear a timing knock or a mechanical one?
