    Default Reverse to 1st gear

When I change from reverse into 1st, typically when leaving home as I pull away in 1st there is a clunk from the front of the car. I assumed this was usual until I drove a SRI 2.0T which didn't do the same. Any ideas or is this common with the 3.2 V6?

I get a thunk from the front of the car - but I don't even have to engage reverse. To be honest, it only does it when I first set off in a morning, or leave work at night (ie, when I first turn the engine over)

It's most likely the ABS pump priming up... I had an old Honda Accord that used to do it.... or it could be the EGR valve?

Most likely the ABS I guess, but if you're still worried (engine mounts surely shouldn't make THAT loud a noise?)

Mines' a 3.0 CDTI (with red TI.. .w00t!) by the way....

they bang like a goodun mate..

EGR valve wouldn't make a noise at all..they're silent..ABS priming?? only if the pump is shot to heck, but that doesn't fit the syptomology..

I've been in... its something to do with the ABS.... Mine only does it when the car is started (mainly from cold) first thing in the morning, last thing at night... or when it's been stood a while. Doesn't do it when I'm driving at any other time, even when I manage to override the TC and boot it...

Actually... isn't the TC in 3.0's ****e these days?!

Aha the memories, I wanna tell ya a story......

Backin 1982 I bought an Escort which being a 1.3 didn't have much guts in it, eventually i got so bored with it I started to REALLY abuse it........

So one day after watching Mad Max for about the 10th time I decided to show my technique to the locals.......

This involved going backwards at about 5-10 mph and while still going backwards slamming it into 1st and giving it full afterburn.......

Expecting it to magically glide to a halt and then spin of forwards, the result was not pretty, I managed to shock the exhaust so bad it fractured and worse still the poor little gearbox just turned into a loud orchestra of gear wheels breaking up, ooops!

I also managed to kill 2 Capri's about the sametime, 1st one was a 3.0 auto which I decided it would look cool at the lights if I held it in gear with the throttle hard down along with the brake pedal at the sametime, expecting an aceamending rear burnout, I received a snapped propshaft and a red face, #2 was a bit different, again 3.0, manual this time, handbrake turn and full throttle coming out of the 180 made a mess of the diff resulting in a prop that spun but wheels that didn't turn.

And thats what TV series like Dukes,Starsky,Nightrider etc do to a young mans mind when he gets his 1st cars to play with, at the time i thought i was IT, but now i shudder at some of the things I used to emulate from setup TV shows and films, all grown up now at last.
