    Default Question on traffic law

Just wondering, after some of the fast/slow driver threads, where the law stands on a road where say, the speed limit is 60mph, but the trafic is all doing 70mph. You're supposed to keep to the limit, but also keep up with the traffic.
I ask as there's a stretch of the A442 through Telford, dual carriageway but restricted to 60mph, and several places where the lanes divide to go separate ways - but the bulk of the traffic sticks to 70mph+.
Do I keep with traffic, or get tailgated, beeped and cut up?

Personally if I am in a "flow" and happy with the speed travelled, and the amount of risk at that time and if travelling slower would effectively cause a rolling roadblock as it were, I do keep pace.

I am not the speed fiend I was when young but notice on the M25 especially I can sit in a flow at over 80mph! if I am so inclined. In Scotland it is far quieter outside peak times and I can travel at the limit with ease if I so choose.

Perhaps you would also have a case if you ended up getting ticketed for it and the rest of the "flow" didn't

I would say no to that one. What if there was a safety speed camera (man with hand held gun or something) and was pointing only at you? You are still speeding in their eyes, regardless of other people around you. He only gets you, whilst the other cars around you get away with it scott free. However, I personally would keep with the flow.

My rule. In W.A anyway. Follow the flow. But if you get a toss pot in a commodore chopping off people behind you. Keep up with the fellow next to you even if he's slower. I'd rather rock up to Uni 2 minutes later knowing I've slowed some ****** down and caused him some frustration.

If the speed limit is 60mph and your doing 70mph and you get caught you've no defence as far as I can see. If you have someone up your chuff because they are going to fast its up to them to overtake you safely or adjust their speed accordingly.

the law states that the speed limit would be enforced as speeding is an absolute offence - your either speeding or your not

    - if there was a camera van and it managed to read all of the associated plates and they were "over the limit" i'm fairly sure that everyone that was "excess speed" (more than 10% above the speed limit posted within ACPO guidlelines) would be sent an Notice of intended procection regarding their actions - but as is so many times the case "peer pressure" of the road kicks in and People speed up to "keep the Peace" - but you would be in the wrong as the limit is posted / reduced for saftey reasons

Its the same here. Unfortunately W.A has no permanent speed camera's appart from large intersections. They are all mobile, setup on the side of any road. So more often than not they are rear facing, hiding in the bushes and capable of catching 5 lanes of traffic. I've been caught 4KM over the limit two weeks in a row thats how un-forgiving they are. 75 bucks a pop is getting a little ridiculous.
