    Question Sky/Satellite engineer advice

Recently I have been unable to receive a picture on some of the channels and I get a message saying 'no satellite signal being received'

I have checked the signal strength on the settings menu and the input strength and quality on the 'line 1' input are both ok but on the 'line 2' the signal goes from non existant to ok. Even when it is ok the picture quality on some channels is either broken up or still not enough to get a picture.

I have checked the dish alignment with a sat finder and it is lined up correctly and all the wires are securely connected.

Could it be a faulty lnb?

    Any help appreciated.

If it's definitely lined up right and you're getting a good signal on one input it's more likely to be a duff cable on the second one. It "could" be the LNB, but it's much more likely to just be a short in the plug on one of the ends of the other cable.

We had a problem with our SKY before and when I rang them, they told me to try switching the 2 cables over that go into the back of the Sky box.

Seemed to work for ours and have had no problems sine *touch wood*

That's a classic call centre tactic to basically make sure the connections are in correctly. We used to do exactly the same thing here for customers and their modem connections when I was in the call centre. If you say to the customer "is your modem correctly connected?" 9 out of 10 of them just say yes without even looking at it. If you ask the customer to remove the connection, blow on it ("to remove dust") and plug it back in, then those 9 out of 10 customers will actually do it, thinking they are doing something useful and you know it's then plugged in correctly lol.

We had months of hassle with ours

Long story short, we live in an "apartment" and the council had installed a communal dish and antennae a few years back.

Meanwhile, we bought our apartment and my wife bought me (?) an HD box with record facility, etc.

It worked for a while then stopped! We got another, same thing, then again???

Sky engineer came out and told us the poor signal had caused our boxes to burn out. Apparently, the HD box doesn't like a sh*t signal (we were getting 7.3% out of 100

Council blamed Sky/Sky blamed council and so on.

Coucil told us WE had to pay to get it fixed since we now own our home.

So THEIR dish slipped through NO fault of ours, but since we were obviously now rich ( don't think so, it cost £20,000 due to me having been a tennant since 1735) we must pay to repair their shoddy workmanship?!

    Sky couldn't help.

We got a refund and now use Freeview with a 500gb hard drive for recording stuff........mind you, I never get to record anything seeing as how there is a schmorgasbord of sh*t for my wife to watch over and over

I would also go with the LNB theory. It used to be plugs were soldered, but now it's a case of twist twist and job done.

Water ingress can create a high resistance connection and play havoc with the signal. Also, water ingress can creep down a badly placed cable, turning the copper black. This also creates high resistance and changes the impedance of the cable.

    Cheers guys,

I had already switched the wires over that go in the back of the box but the line 2 input signal remained crap while the line 1 was ok.

I hate Sky and would rather go with the freeview option or freesat instead of giving them more money for a new box and crappy customer service.

that's proved the cables then so it must be the LNB. The connector/socket on line 2 of the LNB could be dirty or it's completely goosed.

There is an alternative, we had loads of similar trouble with ours, got messed about cronic by Customer Services, eventually got told by an engineer to check the small box facing the dish for spiderwebs, apparently they like geting in there and short things out, then you start losing channels or getting the "no signal" one.
We gave up and went with Virgin, Customer Service just as crap, but rarely have faults now.

No need to pay to have it fixed, just threaten to leave ( you have to be willing to take it to the wire) and they tend to cave rather than lose the custom

Has worked every time so far but then I wouldn't argue with my OH when she gets going. lol!

For arguments sake mate, change the lnb dead easy job assuming your dish is on the house wall unlike mine,i had to get on the roof to do mine which had symptoms indentical to yours, but it did cure it.
