Default K&N cone filter on 2.2 DTi

I was cleaning out the shed the other week and stumbled across a K&N cone filter. I pulled a little grin and set the filter aside with the intention of fitting it to my 2.2 DTi for a laugh.

I fitted it tonight and started the car up. The engine had more of a sound you would tend to associate with a turbo pulling in air. You don't really hear the turbo through the standard intake I guess.

One thing I noticed that definately wasn't audible with the standard airbox on is when revving and letting off there is a sort of grinding noise after the pressure has released. Is this the wastegate chatter? I've heard it on petrol turbos but not really diesel.

It won't stay on for long. I was just interested in its performance over the standard intake.

yes i had one on mine and it was just sucking in hot air, yes its sort of a wastegate chatter noise, but dont you find it just enhances the sound of the diesel engine, tractor like... i took mine off then bought a k&n panel filter much better imo..

Yeah, the engine is much deeper than before. I know the cone filter are poop and suffer badly with heat soak, it'll be coming off soon enough.

I only took the top of the standard airbox off so there is still an airfeed to the filter as the cone is resting in the bottom half of the box.

As I said, it was popped on for a laugh and to see what it would sound like.

The same filter was on my old 'B' V6 when I bought it and it came off straight away to be replaced with a K&N panel filter.

I'll just be popping the standard filter and box back on the DTi.

Had to go into work today and noticed that its putting out quite a bit of smoke since the cone filter went on.

I wonder if its letting more air in and its fuelling more to compensate?
