    Default Service Mileage Indicator

I recently reset my service indicator to 18,000.
Have been watching it regularly to see the correlation between miles actually travelled and what the indicator says.
Today its down to 17,000 and I have actually only travelled 189 miles.
If it continues at this rate, it will be indicating a service due after only covering 3,402 miles.
This probably explains why it was showing 3,000 to service, when I had only done 6,000 since the last service.
Is this a ploy by VX to get more service money from us ?????

The service indicator is exactly that, an indicator
It is a mix of mileage and time
If the service was two weeks ago then it should be down to 17K miles by now

Therefore monitor it over the next 10K miles

However, I noticed on mine a RAPID decline when NOT using the correct oil, although this was more towards the end of the service period

Equally, the service intervals on mine are 30K miles
However, it starts at 31K miles
It loses the first 1K miles in between 500 and 800 miles

It also depends on the driving style and journeys. Short journeys will drop it faster than living on the motorway.

How do you action this display? I'd be very interested in seeing my own readings

Push and hold the trip reset button i think, although not many are still on the eco-flex servicing.

The ECU uses pretty much every sensor at its disposal to figure out how the engine is being used, and works out the time and distance to the next service accordingly.

It is in effect a "virtual" oil quality sensor. The miles to service indicator is an estimate based on how many cold starts, type of driving, oil temp, etc and the oil quality is then estimated and translated to give the mileage to next service.

There is no actual oil quality sensor. So just by resetting the service light, the countdown will start from max interval again.

Thanks for the info guys, pretty much as I though. Probably down to lots of start/stops.
I reset the service indicator because I decided to do a 6 month/6,000 mile oil change. (Like to keep my engines clean on the inside).
I have put the VX Dexos 2 oil in, which is the long life one.
Not that I will leave it in for a long time.
