    Default spanner light / dpf

Came home from work on thursday ( sheffield to Derby daily ) and the spanner light came on around jnc 30 , was able to drive home at no more than 2500rpm , the next day started the car no problem but after about a mile back into limp mode with spanner lit . Drove home from work and again the spanner light came on about a mile from work . When i was waiting at the lights at jnc 28 , I switched off the engine and reset the light , this time I gave it the beans down the A38 only to have the light come on again but this time after about a minute or so I noticed in the rear view mirror plumes of white/grey smoke coming out of the back of the car , this lasted only about 5secs and then the spanner light went out and the car returned to full power .
My question is , has my car just done a dpf regen , only when i looked in the owners manual the glow plug lamp should have lit and not the spanner ?
I normally drive quiet economically so 70 on the M1 on cruise , but should i every now and again give it the beans ?
Funny cars these vectra's you expect the spanner light to be on when it needs some spanner work doing to it ! Its a 06 sri 150 estate.
    Thanks
    Simon

Sounds very much like a regen to me. If its back to normal after the cloud it erupted then you've probably got nothing to worry about.

Simon, on cars built after 2005 the glow light does not light up during regen as the manual suggests. VX disabled this on later cars as owners were taking their cars back to dealerships, believeing there was a fault. This is a backward step as many owners DO want to know when a regen is performing, so that they allow it to finish. The worst thing you can do is switch off during regen. The only way to check the % level is with a Tech2 or similar device, although it has been suggested that the readings are not all that accurate.

Thanks for reply. The one moan i have is how do you tell when you get a spanner light and limp mode that it is for a regen , is it always just for that or could it be something else wrong ??

could be something else as spanner light covers many issues, however there will be a code stored in the ecu. There are many obd2 code readers available on Ebay reasonably cheap. These will read and erase codes, giving you some idea of what actually triggered it. Pretty much a must for the Vectra owners toolbox. The normal indication of regen is high instant fuel consumption, drops to low 20's and if you let it idle, it will show 1.8 galls per hour and the tickover fluctuates between 850 and 1000. Keep driving or hold the revs at 2500 till the regen is done, normally 15 mins, but DO NOT SWITCH OFF during regen. It really messes with the car.

got a code reader coming of ebay , i hope when i plug it in, it shows that it was a regen that was done and nothing else thats more serious. These vectra's seem to have a mind of there own , shame because there are a nice car and i not ready to part with it just yet , ive only had it about 1 month. I used to run a 306 2.0hdi and didn't one single thing go wrong with it , i only sold it as it was up on miles , i hope i dont live to regret it !!
